The story begins with a group of friends who post videos highlighting the corruption and inefficiencies within the Indian public service sector, aiming to raise awareness. These friends express their longing for “Indian Thatha” to return to India and instigate change, as they feel helpless in the current situation. The narrative then follows the comeback of Indian Thatha (Senapathy, played by Kamal Haasan), who resumes his mission to eradicate corruption. Through his actions and inspiring messages, he encourages the youth to take a stand against the corrupt individuals they encounter.

I expected “Indian 2” to be similar to Shankar’s other films, but unfortunately, it wasn’t. Kamal Haasan’s introduction and the subsequent fight sequence quickly indicate the film’s direction. The makeup and long hair used in this key scene are unconvincing and have become fodder for online trolls. It’s surprising that a perfectionist like Shankar approved this look. Everyone anticipated a standout performance from S. J. Suryah, but his role turned out to be quite forgettable.

You don’t need to watch the first “Indian” movie to understand this one, as the film provides a recap. However, what follows is basic in terms of writing and presentation. Senapathy returns to India to address corruption, but Shankar fails to establish a strong cause for the audience to support. Instead, the story meanders, targeting random instances of corruption without a clear direction.

The film lacks flow, and the biggest issue is the confusion with its core idea. Shankar attempts to promote the concept that youth should reject benefits from corrupt practices, but fails to convey this with emotional depth. Instead, the youth revolt against Senapathy, highlighting his shortcomings in this sequel.

The second half is slightly better than the first, with increased drama, but it still falls short. The late actor Vivek delivers a decent performance, and Priya Bhavani Shankar has a good screen presence, though her role isn’t fully utilized. Brahmanandam’s special role is forgettable, and Samuthirakani and Manobala’s performances are typical.

The cinematography by Ravi Varman matches Shankar’s scale, but the inconsistent story and lackluster drama undermine the visual impact. Anirudh Ravichander’s music is disappointing and doesn’t even compensate with a compelling background score, a stark contrast to A. R. Rahman’s timeless music from the original “Indian.” This highlights the challenges faced by contemporary music directors.

Editing by Sreekar Prasad is another weak point. The film feels boring and unnecessarily lengthy, with issues blatantly obvious, yet allowed to persist. Kamal Haasan’s acting is good but feels monotonous, as it’s similar to his previous roles.

Recommendation:

Wait for “Indian 2” to be released on an OTT platform. Save your money and consider watching films like “Kill” or “Maharaja of Sethupathi” instead.
