JNU: Jahangir National University – A Partisan Portrayal

The film claims to be a work of fiction, but it’s clear that the characters are thinly veiled representations of real-life figures like Kanhaiya Kumar and Shehla Rashid. The narrative centers on the 2016 JNU sedition controversy, presenting the events from a right-wing perspective.

Director Vinay Sharma’s portrayal reveals a strong antipathy towards the former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the university bearing his name. This is evident in the repeated derogatory depictions of Nehru’s statue, a stark contrast given that prominent ministers from the ruling party, such as Nirmala Sitharaman and S. Jaishankar, are JNU alumni.

The film distorts the facts of the 2016 sedition case, depicting custodial violence against the accused and glorifying police indifference to widespread campus violence. This biased representation makes the film seem overtly partisan. Furthermore, the frequent slurs against religious and sexual minorities render the movie offensive and distasteful.
